Tips and Tricks:
Tip 1: The Dressing …….
Most Consider a “Salad” Healthy, however the Dressing is the easiest condiment to be loaded with fat, calories, sugar, artificial ingredients , such as artificial sweeteners; corn syrup, etc.
1. Always, Always, Always- ask for dressing on the side. This way you have control of how much dressing you put on to your salad. Most of the time you only need a tiny bit. Like a Teaspoonful and if you need more, add some Balsamic vinegar, or lemon juice! What’s the point in eating a delicious fresh salad if it’s doused in creamy, heavy preservative, filler infested garbage? Yes you’re getting nutrients from the greens, veggies, etc. However the dressing portion is doing more harm then good.
2. If you are fortunate enough to have the bottle, read the ingredients. If it has ingredients you CAN pronounce and understand, for example Olive oil, Balsamic vinegar, herbs, salt, pepper, etc… its probably pretty good.
3. If the dressing is from a restaurant,(like take out) and the ingredients are not listed, it’s best to assume there are some not so friendly ingredients in it
4.Best bet when dining out or even at home, – ask for balsamic vinegar and oil ( separated) most restaurants have it. You can also ask for Red Wine Vinegar, or lemon wedges as an alternative. I love asking for Balsamic Vinegar and Oil because I have full control of the amount of “dressing ” I put on my salad. Most Salads have enough flavor already, thats if you are used to eatting raw veggies. I love raw veggies, but not everyone else is with me on this one. Its an aquired taste, also somepeople may not be able to have raw veggies due to health issues, as an alternative, adding grilled or sauteed veggies on top will give your salad plenty of flavor! Much better then adding a heavy, overly processed, high sodium, high sugar, creamy, mess!
5. Sometimes, Restaurants will give you a balsamic vinaigrette if they do not have Balsamic Vinegar separtely- which is okkkkk- but use with caution, if the ingredients are those you can pronounce without added sugar, corn syrup , partially hydrogenated oils, fillers , crap etc , then you are ok ! A Balsamic Vinaigrette should have Oil, Vinegar, either Mustard or fruit puree, herbs, salt , pepper, honey , etc. Beware: sometimes it contains gluten ! Crazy ! So best to make it yourself!
Tip 2: Pick Organic as often as possible!, Next best is Natural but only if it has the Non GMO verified label!
Tip 3: Meat buy Organic and Grassfed beef with no hormones or antibiotics used; Poultry buy Organic or Free Range with no hormones or antibiotics used, and Fish Wild caught
Tip 4: Grow your own produce if possible ( check out the amazing vertical growing system for an easy alternative)
Tip 5: Color your plate with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables! More colors= more diverse nutrients!
Trick 1: It’s all about the seasonings and using real food not processed, its better for your body and easier to digest! I always add Himalayan sea salt, Pepper, All Purpose seasoning, and Garlic Powder to all of my vegetables, fish/chicken, etc. Easy go to seasonings with out even thinking.
Trick 2: Simple Cheese alternatives: I’ve noticed my skin breaks out when I eat cheese. Occasionally I will have a salad with a little goat cheese- if out at a restaurant, but I’ve pretty much replaced my former cheese passion with nuts / avocado etc . Personally I feel adding these to salads is way more satisfying! And attractive and doesn’t bother my skin ! Hooorray!!!!
